Being Sourced in Our Divine Heritage
A Christophany Advent of Being Divine Vitality – Week Two
This advent season, we are welcomed into receiving and conceiving together—from the very truth of our being—the manifestation of God-Being-Us revealed and birthed in our lives.
Christophany birthed eternally and particularly in us.
Divine Vitality is the primary energetic of this advent, this arrival of the divine being born anew.
Christ is being born again, ever and always. We can inhabit, bear, and bring forth expressions of Christ in and from our very being.
The sacred manifestation of our divine life and being, embodied here and now, is our Christ incarnation today.
Here I am.
Here We are.
Tracing Our Mystical Christ Lineage
Both the gospels of Matthew and Luke trace Jesus’ lineage. They give different records, which has caused some consternation in trying to account for the discrepancy. While outlining the biological line of Jesus most likely served different purposes for the authors of these gospels, for our focus here we will consider the heritage of divine vitality in the mystical lineage of Christ—all the way down to us.
The True Vine
Luke’s account starts with Jesus and goes back, all the way to the beginning, with the final line: “the son of Adam, the son of God” (Luke 3:38).
At the very deepest root of our family tree of life is God. No matter how you trace it for Jesus—or any of us—the heritage of us all as the descendants of God.
As Paul Smith put it in Integral Christianity, “The children of people are people. The son or daughter of a horse is a horse. The offspring of a dog is a dog. The daughters and sons of an elephant are elephants. Why then, would not the children of God be gods!”
Whether your father’s line or your mother’s, our common ancestry is divine.
Speaking as his Christ revelation, Jesus said,
“I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
From the Aramaic roots of these words, Neil Douglas-Klotz expands the meaning to, “I am the vine, rooted, giving, opening to life, the outflow of sacred creation. You are the branches, connected, receiving, absorbing life; the natural receivers, and channels for that flow.”
He then adds in his own words, “The depth of selfhood connecting I to the only I, gives life. The depth of relationship connecting I to you, passes that connection on. Realizing I Am, is the vine of interiority. Realizing You Are, creates the branches of communion” (“I Am” – The Secret Teachings of the Aramaic Jesus audiobook).
It is about staying connected to the great Source, the living flow of life, the True Vine. All as part of one great tree. And it is in this interconnectedness that we live in communion, the family of God. Sometimes we call it the living Body of Christ.
We are not islands. Rather our deep inheritance is the living interrelation of divine life moving throughout all time, even back to and from the very Source. Living in this mystical Christ lineage is about Sourcing and being Re-Sourced by this great living legacy and birthright.
And also, we are affirmed in the truth of this nature of our being personally and directly, from the words of our loving Father/Mother God.
“You are my Child,
Beloved;
with you I am delighted.”
Before Abraham
Rather than tracing back to God listed at the end of the lineage as Luke does, Matthew’s genealogy begins with Abraham and follows down to Jesus. Again, here in our mystical Christ lineage, we might bring in Jesus’ Christ statement,
“Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
Or as the Aramaic Bible in Plain English renders it, “Timeless truth I speak to you: Before Abraham would exist, I AM THE LIVING GOD.”
Here, we go beyond linear time and any kind of historical sourcing rooted in biological ancestors. Jesus speaks here of his divine DNA, his eternal nature as the living God in human form. In other words, as Christ.
In Christophany, the manifestation of Christ, the eternal is met in the here and now. The intersection of the timeless is born in a particular time and a specific place. We miss the message of Jesus if we think this is only a one-time event. “Christ does not belong to the past alone,” Panikkar says, and that “every being is a christophany.”
Christ is “the firstborn of all creation” (Col. 1:15) and we the “many sons and daughters” (Rom. 8:29). This too is our heritage. This also is our mystical Christ lineage that stems from the Eternal Origin and Source of Life beyond and through time.
In our lived reality from our Christ nature and divine birthright, this means that we can draw upon this eternal source as tree roots draw upon the nutrients below. We are being sourced continually from this eternal lineage—not as a documentation of the past, what has come before, but as a mystical wellspring of living energy and source life in the here and now. We have been calling this Divine Vitality.
Here We Are – Being Sourced from Our Divine Vitality Incarnate
Welcome the ground of being—the body of God, the Cosmos, the substance of material reality, the Earth.
We are of this earth nature, this incarnated, physical being.
Not as inert matter, but as the teeming life and blossoming web that courses with the energy of God.
Feel your roots extending and tapping into the divine source, the eternal origin of life. The flow of Divine Vitality in the here and now.
Perhaps it feels thick and rich, like the sap of a tree. It oozes and seeps into the gaps and the cracks of our lives. It flows into the void and empty spaces within, bringing life and nutrients deep within.
Perhaps it feels like the rumbling deep of molten lava. The immense heat and great power within, melting and reshaping the very shape of the depths below. It comes forth in its time, erupting with a great reshaping and reforming of the surface of our lives.
Perhaps it feels as the rich soil, dark and moist with a suffusing covering over. Holding and nourishing the seeds of life through the seasons and cycles of being. Waiting, resting, lying fallow. Breaking open, falling apart, germinating with life. Sprouting with tenderness and delicate beginnings. Holding firm the growth and becoming with solidity and strength. Being the vessel of water and nurturing care through seasons of drought and times of rain.
Perhaps it feels of the River of Life itself. The current of the eternal. The force of life flowing onward and through, whether as a trickle or a rushing torrent. In the ripples and rapids of the surface, echoing above, or in the immersion of the undercurrent force moving deep below. In the oneness of water, it is present at this particular bend and turn of the stream, and it is of and as the entire river before and below.
This divine vitality, divine life, is of and through the body of God, the Earth, the Cosmos, the Universal Christ alive in all things.
Alive in us.
Alive as us.
Here I Am.
Here We Are.
“I Am the true vine.”
The great Tree of Life is not an object we look upon. It is the fabric we are woven into and as.
The vine and the branches, the leaves and the roots, are all one being. All is entwined and interwoven in the great communion of life.
All is grown from the same root, the same Source, the one Origin of God—our singular lineage stemming and branching in endless diversity and bountiful creativity.
The central stock, the core trunk of God holds it all. Holds us all.
We are the branches. The vine is being us. All is the Tree of Life.
Here I Am.
Here We Are.
Here All Is.
“Before Abraham was, I AM.”
Eternal Life is not an endless continuation of linear time. It is the beyond time reality that is ever-present here and now.
When we live in eternal time, we are somehow present with both the most ancient essence of our Being and the most potent future of our possible Becoming. The Alpha and the Omega—which exist unbound to the past and the future.
Eternal Life is not only on the other side of the portals of birth and death, but in and through the channels of divine vitality permeating and suffusing the marrow of our bones, the pores of our skin, and the filaments of nature.
Here too, we are invited to consent. To say yes—if we would—to this Eternal Life, to this Divine Heritage.
Again, it is an inner assent, a deep yes to the quickening of divine vitality that is within us, beyond us, and making us anew in our continual becoming and outpouring into the world. The flow of life coming forth in God, in us, from the Source of our being always already.
The yes to God-Beyond-Us—in whom we live, move, and have our being—becoming us. God-Being-Us.
The Really Real. Who we truly are. The Origin of Life itself. Enlivening and contributing the blueprint, the eternal DNA, the living Logos through every cell and fiber of our divine and human being.
In the ever-unfolding advent of God-Being-Us, our divine heritage is as children of God.
In the eternal advent of God-Beyond-Us, we are eternal beings alive now in the great Tree of Life.
Being sourced in divine vitality from the living origin of all.
Blooming and blossoming in the here and now with the Christophanies of life to the full.
Divine Life
In us.
As us.
Through all.
“You are my Child,
Beloved;
with you I am delighted.”
