Spiritual Intimacy Creates New Life

This week’s rhythm of loving evolution: Being

From the sacred beckoning of spirit and through our divine becoming, we welcome ways of being who we truly are in Christ.

If you haven’t yet engaged with the Beckoning & Becoming offerings, we encourage you to explore those first:

This week, we invite you into several movements of meditative reflections. Each section offers a dynamic of Being born out of our spiritual intimacy. Or perhaps, rather, a way our Being that bears us into spiritual intimacy.

Our Effusive Being

As we come into spiritual intimacy more fully and more holistically among our beloved community, we become more supported, seen, held, and loved. So too, we have further opportunities to share from the depths of who we are in our gifts, passions, and expressions of loving care for one another. Intimacy intensifies and enlivens the flow of mutuality between and among us—and even spills out beyond, effusively.

In the deepening experience of communion, this interflow becomes less a “give and take” and more a communal dance of mutual indwelling and overflowing effusion beyond ourselves and the others we are in immediate relationship with. If our communal inhabiting stays insular, remains self-referential, it will diminish and fade, for this way of love is meant to expand, give more, and even create.

While we may think that intimacy is something we find and come into, it is actually a return to our more natural state of being. Of course, it is not without struggle, attached as we are to our patterns and conditioning of self-referentialism. Community is messy and will involve struggle, just as all intimate relationships do when we show up with our whole selves with others.

As we come into the really real truth of the communal nature of our being, we will more and more find that our deepest essence is vibrant and creative. It is dynamically interactive. And despite what scientism rooted in materialism has conditioned us to believe, our relational interaction is not just a biological function—it is vivacious and effusive.

I (Luke) keep using the word “effusive” because there just isn’t a better way to say it. Anyone who knew me growing up or for most of my life would probably never use this word to describe me. It is not a pattern of my personality. But in the energetic life and presence found in spiritual intimacy and the potent, living We, there is no better way I have found to describe it.

When we speak of effusive mutuality, this is the creative, spiritual nature of loving communion. It is not simply self-serving, personally or collectively. This effusive, interactive dynamism is of the deepest and truest nature of our ontology—that is, our fundamental being.

Who we truly are, our being in its most essential expression, is communion. We are not separate. And, we are not just one.

We are most alive and true in the delight of our communal being.

And as we reflected in our beckoning to spiritual intimacy, the movements of this effusive, interactive being are most akin to that of a great dance.

The Dance of Our Being

Sometimes the dance is jubilant.
Sometimes the dance is slow and close.
Sometimes the dance is exhausting and challenging.
Sometimes we watch, support, and enjoy others in the dance.
And sometimes we rest.

We are all meant to partake in this great dance of life together.

We are not meant to stand on the sidelines, to simply watch and enjoy the music.

We are not the audience, leaving it up to the “professionals” or the ones who are “better” dancers than us.

We are not here to learn about life and love and God—we are here to partake in the ecstasy and agony of the substance of living communion. The grief and the glory of life together. Dancing through it all with one another.

In the nature of our communal being, we live and move and have our being in the relational field of God-Being-Us, all of us, in human form and in nature. And this relational field of God is love in presence, in proximity, in direct relationality to one another.

Could anything be more intimate?

Deep meeting deep. The light in me dances with the light in you.

Being Proliferating

But beware, dancing may lead to procreation!

Things can get quite intense in this place of deep intimacy. It is a passionate affair when we are coming from the depths of our spiritual desires into loving connection with others. And the spiritual is not separate from the human and the material. The fullness of our love is made up of different energies and types of love.

This loving force of love that draws us toward new life is the prime dynamic of eros.

Rather than subverting, squelching, and sequestering this force of life—as Christianity has done so much (as have other religions)—we can welcome and integrate an erotic spirituality in the fullness of our cosmotheandric communal life and being.

Not only “can” we, but rather, it is an essential and vital evolution in the mystical fullness of who we are meant to me. This is much more than mere sexuality. It is of our deepest most spiritual nature in who we truly are.

And, of course, this can be challenging and even quite a bit scary.

Unfortunately, with the sadly all-too-common misuse and abuse of sexuality perpetrated by pastors, gurus, spiritual leaders, and others, it is essential that we hold all of this in transparency, with healthy mutuality, and full freedom. This is a strong force, and it must be honored and acknowledged as such.

Because of its strength and terrible potential for misuse, it has been so often denied and banished. But this ultimately doesn’t work, for the force just then eats away inside or ends up coming out in terrible perversions and destructive forms.

When the force of eros is disconnected from the spiritual, it is relegated into the limitation of human sexuality. For all the beauty and goodness healthy sexuality offers, and all the life it brings forth in the world, we are talking about something more here.

Rather, we are invited to an evolution. “The creative transformation of human love” as Teilhard de Chardin envisioned it. “Love is going through a ‘change of state’ in the noosphere; and, if what all the great religions teach us is correct, it is in this new direction that man’s collective passage to God is being mapped out.”

This evolutionary eros is the creative force that loves the universe into greater being.

This energy of eros is not toward physical consummation, but into the mystical co-creation of holistic new life. The WeCreating of the future, which emerges out of the generative force of loving communion. This is our spiritual eros, which is the consummation of divine spirit among us for the conceptions, the gestations, the shaping and forming of the new heaven and the new earth—joined together in the marriage embrace.

“What paralyses life is lack of faith and lack of audacity,” Teilhard says of this dream. And it is here, at the end of his long essay on “The Evolution of Chastity” where he writes perhaps his most famous and most resonant calling,

“The day will come when, after harnessing the ether, the winds, the tides, gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And, on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.”

Embracing our Wombful Being as Creators of New Life

The Angel Gabriel stands before us, before you, with the call to bear the divine life within.
To conceive and to carry.
To give birth and to bring forth new life, in this life, for the world today.

Do not be afraid!

We are always given the choice to receive. To consent fully. In the life-creating movements of spiritual intimacy today, we will always hold our sovereignty with power and always have the choice to step into mutuality. It is never forced, coerced, or manipulated.

Our creation of new life for the loving evolution of the world will be healthy and life-giving, born out of effusive mutuality. Not without struggle, nor without conflict and difference—as any authentic relationship experiences. But always with the dedication and intention to come from pure soul, from pure love. To honor, stay with, turn toward, and keep learning and growing together into greater healing, love, and life, together.

This is our commitment—one of the sacred marriage vows of the new heaven and new earth.

Nothing less can hold and carry to full term the divine offspring we will bear.

If we dare to birth God in the world tomorrow, we will, today, continue our spiritual work of growing in our capacity, deepening in trust, and coming together in loving intimacy with as much care, honoring, and goodness as we can.

Gabriel’s declaration was not a one-time affair. Jesus was only the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

As Athanasius wrote, “God became human so that humans might become God.”

And humans become God so that we might bear forth a new divine humanity in the world, born of God.

Might this even be the deepest purpose of our souls? The effusive delight of our deepest being dancing together in the communal creation of love-bearing life?

The new life we bear are the divine, human, material expressions of God in the world. The shapes of which are myriad and magnificent.

This is the full mystical implication of Cosmotheandrism.

Our truest, most holistic being—human, material, divine—dancing together continuously in the creation of new life which is ever-more integrated and more completely co-mingled in the fullness of
Who We Truly Are.
God
Alive in Us
Alive as Us
Alive from Us—
life being made
through Us
for All.
